Mediahuis Nederland (formerly the Telegraaf Media Groep/TMG) is the umbrella organisation of the well-known brands De Telegraaf, VROUW, Privé, GroupDeal, NSMBL and Dumpert. TMG also accommodates regional papers, such as Noordhollands Dagblad and Haarlems Dagblad. Mediahuis Nederland forms part of the Mediahuis Groep, an international media company with its roots in Belgium, which operates in Belgium, the Netherlands and Ireland. The Mediahuis Groep also has a vast number of large brands in its portfolio. Mediahuis’ mission is to bring stories and people together.

Better coverage

At Mediahuis’ request, Egeniq implemented the replacement of the company’s current video system by the VideoJS videoplayer. This migration has enabled Mediahuis to provide its video services to its customers in an improved and quicker manner.

AgnoPlay framework

The migration took place within the AgnoPlay framework (www.agnoplay.com), the video player service of Mediahuis. AgnoPlay executes the maintenance of all video players used by Mediahuis and offers 250 million video views on a monthly basis. To be able to have full control over VideoJS, Egeniq’s team created a bridge that also allows the configuration of the system from within AgnoPlay. In this way, the player can be fully configured via the AgnoPlay framework.

Challenges

In order to guarantee a successful migration from Mediahuis’ current player to VideoJS, we had to replace a diverse set of plugins. In addition, we built an agnostic plugin system, consisting of AgnoPlay items that substituted the VideoJS plugins. This approach enabled the use of multiple players while it considerably simplified the replacement of the current player. Of course, the new player had to be suitable for both Android and iOS. The solution: native SDKs.

The end result was integrated into a cool player skin, also implemented by our team. We created the skin in line with the design delivered by Mediahuis. To make things run smoothly, Egeniq also offered opportunities for testing the new player on various browsers, both on mobile devices and on desktop. Moreover, our team executed the project management for the Scrum process. We are very pleased with our collaboration with Mediahuis, which has resulted in an excellently working and beautifully designed video player!

“As Mediahuis we have developed an agnostic player service, called AgnoPlay. AgnoPlay enables us to deploy and maintain an infinite number of players with different configurations from a central point. Until now we had used an “off the shelf” product, THEOplayer, for the player component within AgnoPlay. A great video player that has worked well for us in recent years. However, we were looking for a solution that would allow us to be more in control of the player component. As a result, we ultimately chose the open source solution of VideoJS, the player with the largest footprint in the world. In order to develop a player based on VideoJS that would fully meet our needs, we were looking for a party that could help us with this. Based on past experience and proven quality, we eventually ended up at Egeniq. They have demonstrated several times that they are specialists in this field. In addition, it is simply a very nice team to work with, because they continuously anticipate the wishes of me as a customer.”
